Dr Matthew Wilkinson

Orthopaedic surgeon

Specialising in sports injury management and arthroplasty of the upper and lower limb.

  • MBBS Bachelor of Medicine (University of Queensland 1999)
  • FRACS (Ortho) Fellowship Royal Australian College of Surgeons 2009
  • Member of AOA
  • Director of ORIQL ( Orthopaedic Research Institute of Queensland)

Matt was born in Liverpool, England. His family emigrated to Australia in 1988, where he finished his secondary schooling in Melbourne. From here, Matt completed his undergraduate medical degree in Brisbane in 1999. He was accepted into the Queensland training programme for orthopaedics soon after.

During his training, Matt enjoyed time in a variety of places around the country including Darwin and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. After completing his specialist training, Matt undertook two further fellowships overseas to hone his skills. The first was completed in joint arthroplasty at the renowned University College London Hospital ( UCLH). His second fellowship in upper limb arthroscopy was undertaken in Vancouver, Canada.

Matt gained his FRACS in 2009. From 2010, Matt, his wife and their three sons enjoyed tropical life in Townsville where he provided orthopaedic services across several campuses throughout North Queensland as well as being the Director of Orthopaedics at the Townsville Hospital.

In January 2020 Matt’s story took on another chapter. After a couple of holidays and with an emerging passion for distilling, he and his family relocated to Hobart, Tasmania to explore the wild outdoors, seasons and a cool, slow pace. So far Tassie has lived up to expectation. We look forward to meeting you soon.
